In short
As of 3 November 2026, there is no NTA notice fixing whether NEET UG 2027 will be a computer-based test (CBT) or pen-and-paper. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on 15 May 2026 that NEET would move to CBT “starting next year”, but the decision now waits on the Nandan Nilekani-led task force, whose tenure has been extended to January 2027, as reported by PTI. Hindustan Times reported on 3 November, quoting sources, that 2027 may stay pen-and-paper, with CBT unlikely before 2028. Prepare for the same 720-mark pattern either way.
Updated 3 November 2026. The task-force extension and the “over 50,000 suggestions” figure are from the PTI report carried by Careers360 (1 November 2026) and Medical Dialogues (2 November 2026), both quoting sources, not a government notification. The minister’s 15 May remark is from The Bridge Chronicle and Collegedunia (15 May 2026). The pen-and-paper report is from Hindustan Times as summarised by Inshorts (3 November 2026); we could not open the Hindustan Times page. Pattern and eligibility notes are from futureMBBS (22 October 2026) and MemoNeet (updated 23 October 2026), based on NTA’s NEET UG 2026 bulletin. Check nta.ac.in and neet.nta.nic.in for the 2027 bulletin before you plan around any date.
NEET 2027 mode: what is confirmed and what is not
| Claim | Status on 3 November 2026 | Reported by |
|---|---|---|

| NEET 2027 stays pen-and-paper, CBT not before 2028 | Media report quoting sources only | Hindustan Times, via Inshorts |
| Hybrid (part CBT, part OMR) exam in 2027 | A stakeholder suggestion under review, not a decision | Elets digitalLEARNING (1 November 2026) |
| NEET 2027 exam date and bulletin | Not announced; NTA’s calendar to March 2027 does not list NEET UG 2027, as reported by MemoNeet | MemoNeet, futureMBBS |
Why the mode is still open
NTA cancelled the 3 May 2026 NEET UG paper on 12 May over alleged leaks and held a re-exam in pen-and-paper mode on 21 June 2026, as reported by The Bridge Chronicle, MemoNeet and futureMBBS. Results came on 16 July. In May, NTA’s Director General said a CBT would need about 20 shifts for roughly 22 lakh candidates and normalisation of scores, as reported by The Bridge Chronicle. That scale is why the task force is studying test-centre capacity before any switch.
The panel has received over 50,000 suggestions from students, parents, teachers, institutions and exam bodies, as reported by Careers360 and Medical Dialogues. Elets reports that options under review include a national network of secure CBT centres, a hybrid NEET UG in 2027 with full CBT in 2028, and splitting paper-setting, conduct and security among separate agencies. These are options, not rules.
What will most likely stay the same
- Pattern: 180 questions, 720 marks, +4/–1 marking (Physics 45, Chemistry 45, Biology 90) under the 2026 bulletin, as reported by futureMBBS. Collegedunia reports the minister indicated only the mode would change.
- Eligibility: at least 17 years by 31 December of the exam year, no upper age limit and no attempt limit under the 2026 rules, as reported by MemoNeet and futureMBBS.
- Syllabus: no 2027 syllabus has been published; the NMC Class 11–12 syllabus applied in 2026.
- Counselling: MBBS seats will still be filled through MCC and state rounds on NEET rank. See our round-by-round counselling calendar and MBBS eligibility guide.

What to do in the next 90 days
- Keep preparing for 720 marks in the current pattern; do not wait for a mode decision.
- Take some timed computer-based mocks as well as OMR practice, so either mode is familiar.
- Keep Class 10 and 12 documents, category and domicile certificates current; past registration windows opened in February.
- Watch nta.ac.in and neet.nta.nic.in from January 2027 for the task-force outcome and the 2027 bulletin.
- Ignore anyone selling “confirmed” 2027 papers or shift details. Nothing of the kind has been announced.
